Bhaikaka University, Karamsad celebrated World Breastfeeding Week from the 1st to the 7th of August 2021 with the coordination of the Neonatology, Pediatric, Obstetric & Gynecology, and Nursing Departments. On this occasion the Provost, BU Dr. Utpala Kharod; Dean, PSMC Dr, Himanshu Pandya; Head of Neonatology, Dr. Somashekhar Nimbalkar; Head Pediatric Dr, Krutika Tandon; Senior A doctor from Ob & Gynec Dr. Smurti Vaishnav and Nursing Chief Officer Kuldeep Judge were present. The program was planned by Consultant Neonatology Dr. Reshma Pujara.
Various programmes were conducted to highlight the theme 'Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility.' The breastfeeding quiz competition and poster competition were also organized. The winners were awarded by the Academy of Pediatrics, Karamsad.
A Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Training Course based on WHO and UNICEF Guidelines, 2020 conducted in July 2021 for 85 nurses who are involved with the care of mothers and babies. The Breastfeeding Champion Nurses -were honored with certificates and mementos jointly by the university and Inner Wheel Anand Round Town New Gen Club. For the promotion of Kangaroo Mother Care and Breastfeeding, the Mother Support Group was formed and spread awareness in the community through video presentations.
Dr. Kharod said Breastfeeding should be initiated within one hour (as early as possible) after delivery and exclusively breastfeeding the baby for up to six months and continuing breastfeeding along with other supplement foods for up to two years is recommended for the growth of the child.
The students of G H Patel School and College of Nursing of BU performed a skit and presented posters on the basis of the theme at neonatal ICU and created awareness under the guidance of Principal Smt Raksha Parmar.
