Bhaikaka University observes World Movement Disorders Day

Bhaikaka University observes World Movement Disorder Day on 29 November 2022.

Help us boost awareness through the month of November #MoveDisorder

Movement disorders are some of the most complex diseases to treat, diagnose and understand. They are also under-emphasized across healthcare.

- Lack of knowledge about what ‘Movement Disorders’ means.

- Patients are not referred to specialists soon enough.

- A rapid rise in cases is predicting a ‘Parkinson’s pandemic’.

- In many parts of the world, movement disorder drugs are still not widely available.

By raising awareness, we hope to:

- Make it easier for all of us in the field to share our important work by creating a basic global understanding.

- Empower patients to seek essential specialized care earlier.

- Inspire young health professionals to take up the unique challenges of the specialty.

The International Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Society (IPDMDS) and Movement Disorder Society of India (MDSI) are organizations working on improving treatment, education, research, and care of these disorders.

Dr. Soaham Desai, Professor, and Head, of the Department of Neurology, Shree Krishna Hospital, and Pramukhswami Medical College Bhaikaka University, who is also elected executive committee member of MDSI and website editor of MDSI has been working to improve treatment, care, research, and education about movement disorders in the Charutar region.

The Healing Tree Clinic at Privilege Center, Shree Krishna Hospital teaching hospital of Bhaikaka University runs a Parkinson's disease and movement disorders clinic on the first and third Thursdays of every month. A large number of patients do take benefit from these services at the Healing Tree.

Still, a lot of patients in the region are not able to have treatment as per a study conducted in the villages in the region. This study was done through a WORLD FEDERATION OF PAPER GRANT AWARD to Dr. Soaham Desai, done in a population of ten villages, ninety percent of patients were not aware of these disorders and not taking any treatment.

These findings suggest an urgent need for increased efforts to improve awareness of these disorders in the community.

29 November would be celebrated as International Movement Disorders Day in the year 2022 throughout the world to raise awareness of these disorders.
