Bhaikaka University Partners with Government to Tackle Maternal and Child Mortality in Anand District
Bhaikaka University, Karamsad, is actively collaborating with the State Health System Resource Centre (SHSRC) and the Government of Gujarat in a significant initiative aimed at reducing the high rates of maternal and child mortality, in Anand, Gujarat.
Recognizing the critical need for intervention, the SHSRC has launched "Swasthya Setu," a proactive initiative that leverages the expertise of Shree Krishna Hospital, a constituent institution of Bhaikaka University, and the Anand district health team.
A key aspect of this collaboration involves regular outreach by specialists from Shree Krishna Hospital. Gynecologists and pediatricians from the hospital now conduct weekly visits to Community Health Centers (CHCs) in Borsad and Ras villages, providing crucial on-site consultations and support. Furthermore, physicians from the medicine department also contribute their expertise through alternating weekly visits to these CHCs, ensuring comprehensive medical care access for the local population.
The situation in Borsad, which has been identified as particularly sensitive regarding maternal deaths, is receiving focused attention. The Community Medicine Department and the Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBG) Departments of Pramukhswami Medical College (PSMC), constituent institution of Bhaikaka University, are playing a vital role in ensuring the timely referral and effective management of high-risk pregnant mothers and newborns requiring specialized care.
Dr. Manisha Gohel from the Community Medicine Department at PSMC, who serves as the Nodal Officer for the SHSRC's PHC mentoring project, highlighted the development of a dedicated WhatsApp group. This platform connects ASHA workers with medical officers at Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and CHCs, facilitating immediate communication and enabling swift identification and referral of mothers at risk, particularly in Borsad and surrounding areas. She further emphasized the positive impact of these coordinated efforts, noting improved referrals of high-risk mothers and enhanced communication leading to appropriate and timely management of critical cases.
This collaborative initiative, strongly supported by the Government of Gujarat, underscores a shared commitment to significantly reduce the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in the Anand district. Bhaikaka University is committed to contributing its medical expertise and resources through Shree Krishna Hospital and Pramukhswami Medical College, playing a crucial role in building a supportive network and ensuring timely interventions, proving vital in saving lives and improving the health outcomes for mothers and children in the region.
