Collaborative Bike Rally Marks World Organ Donation Day

Bhaikaka University, NSS Unit, the Indian Medical Association (Anand), and Dr. Shivani Bhatt Charitable Foundation organized a bike rally on 13th August 2024 to celebrate World Organ Donation Day. Starting at 10:30 a.m. from Bhaikaka University Sport Ground, the event saw enthusiastic participation from students across Anand District. The rally covered the main streets of Karamsad, Vidhyanagar, and Anand, and concluded at Shastri Maidan Anand at 11:30 a.m., highlighting the importance of organ donation through community involvement and public awareness.

Speaking at the event, Jitesh Desai, Medical Superintendent of Shree Krishna Hospital, emphasized the need to raise awareness about brain death. He noted that educating people about brain death is crucial for encouraging organ donation. “Understanding brain death and making timely decisions can save many lives and ensure that donors continue to make a difference,” Dr. Desai said. He added that vital organs like the heart, liver, kidneys, intestine, lungs, and pancreas can only be donated in cases of brain death. The rally and ongoing efforts by Shree Krishna Hospital aim to promote organ donation, which can significantly impact many lives.

Dr. Shailesh Shah, Hon. Secretary of the Dr. Shivani Bhatt Charitable Foundation, reported that Ahmedabad Civil Hospital received 156 organ donations last year. The Shivani Human Organ Donation Help (SHODH) initiative, launched in collaboration with Bhaikaka University, Karamsad, aims to promote organ donation by raising public awareness, facilitating organ retrieval, and creating a green corridor for organ transport. The project’s third phase will focus on developing an organ transplant facility at the Shree Krishna Hospital.

Dr. Shah highlighted a recent achievement of Shree Krishna Hospital: the successful transplantation of organs from an 81-year-old donor, which had a significant impact by saving multiple lives. Mrs. Veena Shrivatava, the wife of the 81-year-old donor, underscored the critical importance of organ donation. She passionately encouraged everyone to participate in and register for this campaign to help save lives.
