Enhancing Nursing Skills for Cancer Patients
"Development of Nursing Skills for Cancer Patients" a workshop for nursing professionals organized by Bhaikaka University, Karamsad on 7th July 2022.
On 7th July, in a special conference focusing on the role of Nursing care, the Bhikhabhai Auditorium of Bhaikaka University saw massive participation of 170 nursing professionals from various hospitals including Shri Krishna Hospital- Karamsad, Zydus Hospital- Anand, Apollo Hospital, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences- Ahmedabad and ND Desai Medical College and Hospital – Nadiad.
The purpose of having this workshop as explained by Ms. Kuldeep Judge(Chief Nursing Officer, Shree Krishna Hospital) was to understand the significance of nursing care with the increase in the number of patients affected by cancer. She emphasized the importance of early diagnosis for timely and proper treatment.
Dr. Nirav Asarawala, the Senior full-time Consultant Medical Oncologist of the Cancer Centre of Shree Krishna Hospital in his address to the participants said that 21% of men and 18% of women in the world suffer from cancer and 13% of men and 9% of women die due to this disease. He further stated that the demand for oncology nursing has increased since nurses have a more important role to play in the care of the patient right from the diagnosis to the last stage of the disease, in providing palliative treatment to critically ill patients, in extending mental and spiritual support to the patient and his family, in raising awareness for the prevention of the disease, and management and rehabilitation of the entire treatment.
In this workshop, specialist doctors from the cancer department of the hospital exchanged information on the topic of developing nursing skills. Dr. Priyanka Srivastava (Consultant Medical Oncology) spoke on Managing Chemotherapy Patients - Responsibility for Nursing, Dr. Amrita Tripathi (Senior Resident, Radiation Oncology) spoke on the role of nursing in Radian Therapy, Dr. Sanket Mehta (Assistant Professor, Anaesthesia) spoke on the need for palliative care in oncology patients, Dr. Sanket Shah (Haematologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Physician) spoke on nurses role in the bone marrow transplant unit, Dr. Raghunandan GC (Consultant, Surgical Oncology) spoke on post-operative care for the patient, Dr. Riddhi Trivedi (Consultant, Oral-Onco Surgeon) spoke on nursing care for head and neck cancer patients. In addition, Dr. Jayesh Patel (Consultant Vascular Surgeon) spoke on the Nursing Management of Access Devices. Dr. Riddhi Trivedi provided information on the topic of tracheostomy care and Ms. Jigna Patel, Dietitian gave her views on the need for nutrition for cancer patients.
Dr. Utpala Kharod (Provost, Bhaikaka University) and Dr. Himanshu Pandya (Dean, Pramukhswami Medical College) lauded the initiative of the nursing department.
