Every year, Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad, the teaching hospital of Bhaikaka University sees patients travelling from various countries like Kenya, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Arab to seek treatment at the hospital. Healthcare infrastructure in these countries is still underdeveloped and lacks modern medical facilities.
A Nigerian, two-year-old male child with Congenital Heart Disease and Down Syndrome was treated with lifesaving surgery for rare heart disease at Bhanubhai & Madhuben Patel Cardiac Centre of Shree Krishna Hospital, the teaching hospital of Bhaikaka University, Karamsad.
The parents found that the child had difficulty in breathing. They took him to the Paediatric Interventional Cardiologist of Nigeria Dr Joe Chinawa. He diagnosed the child with a heart defect and referred him to the Paediatric Cardiologist, Dr Bhadra Trivedi of B. M. Patel Cardiac Centre, Shree Krishna Hospital.
His mother an Associate Professor in Nigeria took him to the Shree Krishna Hospital where Dr Bhadra Trivedi did his Echocardiogram. On examination, the child was diagnosed with a ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), a hole in the heart that's present at birth.
The child was also suffering from down syndrome and the prevalence of seizures. It was hard to perform VSD closure surgery. The Paediatric Cardio Thoracic Surgeon at the Centre, Dr Vishal Bhende consulted with the Paediatric Neurologist of Shree Krishna Hospital. Dr Kapil Jetha, conducted MRI and EEG to understand the severity of the condition.
Dr Bhende performed VSD closure surgery successfully with help of an anaesthetist and paramedical staff. According to Dr Bhende, the surgery was challenging, as the child was suffering from multiple seizures. Congenital heart disease is a significant morbidity and determinant of mortality in children with down syndrome. Early diagnosis and treatment are necessary.
His mother thanked the doctor for the successful surgery, compassionate attention, and professional care of her child.
