SKH teaching hospital of BU performed a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) on a 44-year-old with multiple myeloma

Shree Krishna Hospital, teaching hospital of Bhaikaka University, Karamsad has successfully performed a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) on a 44-year-old patient with multiple myeloma. Dinesh J Patel Bone Marrow Transplant Centre is the only Centre in the Charotar region providing BMT services.
Bhaveshkumar Patel from Petlad Taluka was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells (specialized blood cells that produce antibodies to fight infection). The BMT procedure was conducted successfully by our team of experts: Dr. Suraj Goyanka, Haematologist and BMT specialist, Dr.Vishal Oza Resident, and Dr.Swati Patel, Medical Officer.
“The patient has been getting cancer treatment since 2021 at our MS Patel Cancer Centre. With this condition the abnormal plasma cells build up in the bone marrow and impair the production of normal blood cells and can affect kidneys, bones, and other organs of the body, impeding normal function”, said Dr. Goyanka.
“After counseling with the patient and his wife, we decided to conduct an autologous stem cell transplant. Chemotherapy was used as the first form of treatment, and BMT was subsequently done to achieve good control of the disease. The blood bank staff, Dr. Manthan Patel, and the team collected stem cells. After two weeks, new blood cells are produced and the patient was discharged in a stable condition”, Dr.Goyanka added.
His wife said, “I am happy with the timely guidance and treatment provided by the doctor”.
