The cardiac center of SKH teaching hospital of BU treated Infant and toddler for extremely rare anomalies of lung

The unique two cases of CCAM (Cystic adenomatoid malformations) were treated at Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad as the incidence of such cases is reported 1 in 10000 to 1 in 35000 births. Bhanubhai and Madhuben Patel Cardiac Centre did surgical management of CCAM on a two-month-old infant and two year-old toddler with two distinct surgical techniques with a successful outcome.

The lungs & heart defects are larger in numbers in children, which is of serious concern. Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation is a benign lung lesion that appears before birth as a cyst or mass in the chest. It is made up of abnormal lung tissue that does not function properly, but continues to grow and perhaps increase the likelihood of a predisposition to subsequent malignant change within the CCAM or elsewhere in the lung. Cyst may become infected or sometimes turn fatal if not treated surgically . But with improved medical care, timely detection and management, it is possible to save babies with CCAM, said Dr. Vishal Bhende , Pediatric Cardio -Thoracic surgeon, Bhanubhai & Madhuben Patel Cardiac Centre, Karamsad

A two-month-old child from Bochasan village of Anand District was admitted to the Pediatric Department of Shree Krishna Hospital,Karamsad for the treatment of G6PD deficiency (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) and had a complaint about breathing. Dr. Rajesh Pankhaniya, a pediatrician, primarily examined him. The chest x-ray findings led to the suspicion of cystic adenomatoid malformations, which was then confirmed by a CT scan. The child was then referred to Bhanubhai & Madhuben Patel Cardiac Centre where Dr. Vishal Bhende , Pediatric Cardio -Thoracic surgeon examined the child and performed technically difficult lung preservation surgery and removed the cyst from the lung.

In another case two year old child from Khambhat was admitted to Pediatric Department of Shree Krishna Hospital , Karamsad with the complaint of deformity on chest. Dr. Deepali Shah, Pediatrician examined him. The finding of CT reports confirmed Cystic adenomatoid malformations .

Dr. Vishal Bhende , Pediatric Cardio -Thoracic surgeon performed the complicated surgery to remove affected upper lobe of his right lung (approximately 40%) with the help of Dr Amit Chitaliya, renowned Pediatric Airway disorder specialist & Chief Intensivist of SGVP Holistic hospital-Ahmadabad. This long procedure required an able anesthesia & intensivist team of the hospital under the leadership of Dr. Gurpreet Panesar and Dr Amit Kumar.

Dr Amit Chitaliya was called upon to cardiac centre of Shri Krishna Hospital, Karamsad to perform highly advanced 2.2 mm ultra-thin bronchoscopy guided placement of very thin catheter into right side of the lung named as endobronchial balloon tipped blocker to give perfect lung condition for Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Bhende to operate. For this surgery Dr. Jitesh Desai ,Medical Superintendent of the Shree Krishna Hospital facilitated availability of the endobonchial blocker from Delhi and the hospital borne the cost of the blocker .

Entire hybrid procedure was completed meticulously and uneventfully .Western world uses this novel-hybrid technique nowadays for better surgical resection of tissues and faster post operative recovery , Dr Amit explained.

This case is a live example of selfless services of two “SEVA” oriented institutes & their doctors, where in world class technology as well as highly trained doctors of both institutes joined hands to save this child that too standing beside the patients during festival days of Diwali. The child was benefited under the Pradhanmantri Jan Arogya Yojna .
